What are the research-backed benefits of HT?
Horticultural Therapy (HT) builds on the Biophilia theory, which recognizes that humans are naturally drawn to nature and benefit physically, mentally, and emotionally from this connection (Wilson, 1984).
Research has shown that HT can improve overall well-being, support targeted health outcomes, and foster personal growth. For example, ‘greening’ hospital spaces can reduce functional decline, and HT can enhance self-identity in women.
Key benefits include:
- Mental & emotional well-being:
Reduces anxiety, depression, agitation, and apathy; enhances self-identity and emotional intelligence - Cognitive & creative engagement:
Supports attention restoration, problem-solving, creativity, and cognitive function across ages - Physical health:
Improves flexibility, endurance, and gentle physical activity - Social & behavioural outcomes:
Encourages social connection, sustainable behaviours, and skill development
Do participants and clients need gardening experience?
No—our programs are designed for all experience levels, including beginners.
We work with a wide range of abilities, interests, and comfort levels, and each program is customized to meet your group’s needs and accessibility requirements.
What this means:
- No prior gardening experience needed
- Indoor and outdoor options
- Adapted for mobility, cognitive, and sensory needs
- Introductory and more advanced activities available
We serve diverse groups across community, healthcare, education, and workplace settings.
